Do You Perceive God's Light Shining in the Darkness?

Do You Perceive God’s Light Shining in the Darkness?

By Brooke Holt

“O God, who made this most holy night to shine with the glory of the Lord's resurrection: Stir up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism, that we, being renewed both in body and mind, may worship you in sincerity and truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” The Collect for Easter, Book of Common Prayer

Today’s collect reminds us as God’s people that light shines into darkness and that darkness cannot overcome the light. On Good Friday, it looked like the powers of darkness had squelched the light of Christ. Yet, on the third day, God’s glory shines even more brightly through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Throughout each of the readings today, this light shines, illuminates, and makes the way clear for those who belong to Jesus Christ.

This light of glory beckons you to draw near that you may see what God has accomplished through his Son. He invites you into this holy light. The Collect prays: “Stir up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism”. Adoption strongly conveys that you are wanted. God longs for you to be part of his family, and he is giving you full access to his family. As his adopted child, you are loved, honored, a true part of the family, and given a full inheritance.

When you feel as if the darkness surrounds you or that it is winning, proclaim this truth – ‘I am the beloved child of God, adopted, and an heir to his kingdom’. As on Good Friday, it may seem darkness is winning in this world. Abd the world seems to be upside down right now. While there may be truth to that, God still sits on the throne with Jesus at his right hand. Together they reign over the darkness. Nothing remains unseen. And while the darkness can feel oppressive and overwhelming, you can be renewed both in body and mind.

How can you experience this renewal in the dark times? Through worship, through remembering what God accomplished on Easter day, and believing he has made the way for you. On Easter day, Jesus defeated sin, death, and all the powers of darkness. His victory is your victory.

May you know the joy of victory today, walk in his light, and be renewed in body and mind.
