“O Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your loving-kindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” The Collect, Proper 7, Book of Common Prayer
As my family has navigated some very tumultuous circumstances for the past 14 months, I have found myself reading and meditating on the Psalms. I haven’t just read through one version of the Psalms but many. It has comforted me to read the laments, questions, and struggles of these psalmists. Even more comforting is that proclamations of God’s faithfulness, goodness, and steadfast love surround every lament, question, and struggle.
As I read yesterday, God assured me he was with me and has both held me and upheld me in our storm: “God’s glory is all around me! His wrap-around presence is all I need, for the Lord is my Savior, my hero, and my life-giving strength” (Psalm 62:5, TPT). I envisioned myself completely wrapped in the Lord – in his glory, his presence, his protection, and his strength. With the Lord all around me, how can I fall or fail? I have full confidence when I know I am wrapped and held in his mighty arms.
As you read and pray The Collect for today, the Lord reminds you that when he is the foundation of your life, you are fully surrounded by his loving-kindness. He has you and will not let you go. No matter what is happening to you or around you, you are secure in him. You can rest in this knowledge because Jesus Christ is your Savior as well as the one “who lives and reigns with the Lord and the Holy Spirit”. This God who assures you of his presence and care is the God who has all power and understanding.
Are you living on the foundation of the Lord and trusting in him? Or are you allowing the storms of your life to dictate your thoughts, feelings, and actions? When you make the Lord the foundation of your life, not only will he surround you with his love, goodness, and strength, but he will faithfully guide you through the storms. He will give you wisdom in your innermost being and peace in even the most challenging circumstances.
