“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:37-39
Years ago, while meeting with a spiritual mentor of mine, she spoke words these words to me: “Brooke, you have been an overcomer, but the Lord wants you to live as more than a conqueror.” Her words inspired me as this has always been a favorite Scripture verse of mine, but I also felt perplexed. How did living as an “overcomer” and “more than a conqueror” differ, and how could I transition from one to the other?
For the past nineteen years, God has had me on what I term my “healing journey”. I can honestly say God has worked miracles in my life! Upon hearing these words of my mentor, I knew that I had been healed of so many things. I knew God’s work in my life was real and evident. I felt overwhelmed with gratitude while I also longed for more and deeper healing in my life.
Even with everything God had done throughout those healing years, I still struggled to comprehend God’s love for me. I had ‘head knowledge' of his love and could recite plenty of wonderful Bible verses about his love for me. Yet, a great divide still existed between what I knew about God with my head and what I received into my heart. Due to the trauma in my life, I had built many walls around my heart. These walls felt safe to me, protective. Yet, they not only kept out the bad but also much of the good. I needed God’s love to penetrate through those walls and to captivate my heart.
This breakthrough was the next great divine healing. It did not happen overnight, but gradually I surrendered more to the Lord and asked him to fill me with his Spirit. As the Spirit increased within me, so did my capacity to receive God’s love, to believe it, and to allow that love to transform me even more.
As I grew in God’s love, I began to understand what it means to live as “more than a conqueror”. With God’s love wrapped around me, I am perfectly secure. As Paul goes on to write that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, he intends for you and for me to know that wrap- around love, to know that no matter what we face in this journey of life, he is with us. His love holds us. His goodness sustains us. His grace covers us. He is everything we need.
Nothing in this life can separate you from God. He has you and will never let you go. Not only does he have you, but he also wraps you in his love. In his love, you can overcome anything this world brings against you. Beyond that, you are “more than a conqueror” through Christ.
