“O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (The Book of Common Prayer, Collect for Pentecost)
As Christians gather for worship, we remember and celebrate the day of Pentecost. What a day for the early Christians, the church, and us today! Just as Jesus had promised his disciples, the Holy Spirit did come upon them to remind them of everything he had taught them. Not only did the Spirit remind them of Jesus’ words, but the Spirit also continued to teach them the ways of God and then empowered them to live in those ways. The Law of God went from being external to internal, from written on tablets of stone to written on human hearts. Pentecost was and is a life-changing day as God’s people became the dwelling place of God.
You are now the dwelling place of God through the gift of the Holy Spirit! Our Collect for today reminds you of the light of the Holy Spirit. The light of the Lord has come to illuminate your life. He does this by reminding you of the words of Jesus, by guiding you to make the right judgments in all things, and by bringing his comfort. The words of the Lord are like the instruction manuals for our lives; they provide clarity and understanding. Are you allowing the Lord to guide you by his Word and Spirit?
The comfort of the Spirit comes in knowing you are never alone. God is with you; God is in you; God is for you. Though this world may feel overwhelming at times, you have his presence and power to empower you for all things and to comfort you in times of distress. Are you looking to the Spirit for that power and comfort?
The light of Christ now dwells in you. We celebrate the day of Pentecost to remember this precious gift so that we may live abundantly in the Spirit!
