“Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.” (Revelation 22:14)
The book of Revelation is full of symbols, imagery, and powerful language. Even the greatest biblical scholars often shy away from an intense study of this book due to its complexity. Often Christians are so intimidated by reading and applying Revelation that they forget it includes many promises of the perfect rest that awaits us in the new heavens and the new earth. Our verse for today is one of those comforting passages if you can grasp what it says.
So, what does it mean to wash one’s robes, partake of the tree of life, and enter the city by the gates? Maybe perfect commercial washing machines in heaven will constantly run to keep robes Oxi-clean white, or maybe we will have perfect bodies because we will only eat from trees in our eternal home. Or maybe we will understand the significance again of what Jesus has done for us through his cross and resurrection.
Though earthly sins would cover us with shame and guilt, the blood of Jesus has been poured out so that every stain is washed away in this world and for the next. When the blood of Jesus washes us, we are not seen or defined by our sins and mistakes. Instead, God gives us the robes of righteousness. The righteousness of Jesus Christ covers us, cleanses us, and makes us new. Thus, we are the ones who have washed our robes.
As God’s redeemed children, we have access to God and eternal life in his presence. The Tree of Life is for the healing of the nations and the perfect nourishment for God’s people. We are invited to partake of this healing and nourishment in this world and our eternal home. The Father longs for his children to experience this fullness today.
The book of Revelation tells of what is to come in the new heavens and the new earth while it also teaches about our heavenly Father’s character. Through Christ, he has made the way for our redemption, healing, and divine sustenance today and always. Are you living as one who has been washed and renewed? Are you partaking in his gift of healing and daily nourishment? Are you looking forward to entering that city of God where you can see him face to face, know the perfect healing and wholeness to come, and live in the fellowship your heart yearns for today?
